The Tigray Region is the northernmost region of Ethiopia. The capital and largest city of Tigray is Mekelle. Tigray’s official language is Tigrinya and its people make up a large part of the Ethiopian population. Tigray is also the home of many famous ancient cities like Aksum and Adwa, where the Ethiopians defeated the Italian colonizers in the Battle of Adwa in 1896.
